About Sober Atheist

A 100% secular path to sobriety without faith-based programs.

About Us

We are alcoholics and addicts who identify as 100% atheist. Like many others, we struggled to find recovery programs that didn’t require belief in a higher power. We believe that sobriety should be built on personal responsibility, community, and evidence-based habits—not faith or prayer.

Sober Atheist was created to offer a real alternative for those who want to live clean and sober lives without religious or spiritual frameworks. We know firsthand that recovery is possible through daily effort, honest self-reflection, support from others, and a commitment to personal growth.

Our community exists to provide encouragement, tools, and a clear secular path to sobriety—for anyone who needs it.

Our Mission

The mission of Sober Atheist is to provide a 100% secular framework for people seeking recovery from addiction. We believe that lasting sobriety is built on reason, action, and mutual support—not on religious faith or belief in a higher power.

We respect all paths to recovery, including AA and NA, and support anyone who finds success there. But for those who need a different option—one that matches a secular worldview—Sober Atheist offers a supportive, nonjudgmental alternative.

Our goal is simple: stay clean, stay honest, stay free—and help others do the same.

Disclaimer

Sober Atheist is an independent recovery resource created by individuals who identify as atheist and seek a secular path to sobriety. We are in no way affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), or any of their associated fellowships or organizations. The content, structure, and language used on this website are original and do not represent the views or materials of AA, NA, or their respective programs.

We acknowledge the impact and effectiveness that AA and NA have had for many individuals in their recovery journeys. Our intent is not to criticize or compete with those programs, but rather to provide an alternative for those who do not align with spiritual or religious frameworks. While AA and NA use a 12-step model grounded in belief in a higher power, Sober Atheist offers a secular adaptation for those who prefer a recovery path based on reason, personal responsibility, and community support without religious or spiritual components.
